Before Leaving:

Call your credit card companies and let them know you are leaving for a trip -- otherwise your fraud alert may prevent you from using your credit card. Also call your credit cards and find out if you will be charge a service charge if you use it abroad -- most CC companies will charge.

Getting Money:

Be sure to check in with your home banking institution to see what international banks will allow you to use their ATMs without a large fee. If possible, take your passport and take money out from the teller itself. Then you can take out money but ask for it in smaller denominations. It's much easier than having to go through the hassle of having to break a $20 or $50 bill on the street. Also, before leaving your home country, go to your regular bank and ask them if they will give you smaller bills to begin with. 100 US $1 bills go a long way.
