You Must Know from Big Bear:

Buy tire chains in advance of your trip. You never know when you will need them and they are hard to come by even at the base of the mountain. There are places at the base of the mountain that sell them (i.e. Wal-Mart) but a lot of store are sold out of the most popular sizes and don't carry all types of chains. Once you head up the mountain to where they check for chains, you are out of luck. There are licensed guys who will put on your chains for $40, but they are not allowed to sell chains, so if you can't find someone willing to break the rules, you will have to turn around, go back down the mountain, and hope you can find a place that is open and has you tire size in stock. POINT IS: Buy chains before you go. I suggest ordering them on line. Z Cables are the easiest to install (the material is similar to bonji cords vs. mental chains).
