What to Do in Ooty:

If you're making your way by road to Ooty, ensure that you reach the National Park before sun down. The gates are supposed to be closed after sun down and therefore vehicles must take the long way around (adds about 50km which is 60-90mins). You may be able to make it through if you carry a few (i.e. 6-10) Rs. 20/ notes (the guards can be bribed).

Getting Around in Ooty:

If you cannot secure a train booking to your desired destination (i.e. because it is full) book the same train to a destination one station further. Typically you would only have to pay and addition Rs. 50/ - 100/ for the ticket. It will then allow you to a light at the station of your desire i.e. the station before where your train journey is supposed to end. If you're thinking this doesn't make sense, you are right, but apparently it works.
