Getting Around in Guangzhou:
1. There are two train stations in Guangzhou with service to Hong Kong, the old and the new on. Make sure you go to the new train station. Unless you speak the language, you will not get to your destination at the other train station. They do not see foreigners there and the system for buying tickets and boarding trains is chaotic.

2. Bring a map of the so you can be sure you are going to the right place when touring or taking a taxi. It helps to have a visual map when asking for directions because it can be difficult to communicate. Bring a map with you because once you arrive you may not be able to find a map in English. The map I bought was in Mandarin..

3. Carry the business card from your hotel at all times. There is a good chance your taxi driver will not speak English, or will not understand your attempt to pronounce Chinese. When you want to return to your hotel, give the card to your taxi driver. Also, if you are planning to take a taxi somewhere, have the hotel write down in Chinese where you to go. Lastly, take the business cards of the places you go that you may want to return to.

4. Whenever you ride in a taxi, get a receipt. If you accidentally leave something in the cab or have a problem that is the only way to get in touch with the company and identify the taxi.

Dining in Guangzhou:
1. Pack some granola bars, or your favorite non perishable food. The food in china is nothing like the Chinese food we are used to eating in the United States and other western countries. I thought the food was disgusting and even though I hate McDonalds, I ate there several times while I was in China.

2. Before you go, make sure your U.S. dollars are clean and crisp. If you go to the bank a couple of weeks in advance, you can order new bills. This is important, because the hotels and banks won't change bills that are marked or in bad condition

Visas:
Check the date on your visa to make sure it is correct or you may not be able to enter the country. Also, check how many times you can enter the country on your visa. A layover may count as one entrance, so you would need another entrance to come back.
