You Must Know from Beijing:

1. When you go to China, bring toilet paper and baby wipes with you in your purse or backpack. The restrooms will not have toilet paper and the air is very dirty so you will want to freshen up and clean your hands with baby wipes.

2. Bring tampons with you to China because you can't buy them there.

Getting Around in Beijing:

1. Carry the business card from your hotel at all times.  There is a good chance your taxi driver will not speak English, or will not understand your attempt to pronounce Chinese. When you want to return to your hotel, give the card to your taxi driver. Also, if you are planning to take a taxi somewhere, have the hotel write down in Chinese where you to go. Lastly, take the business cards of the places you go that you may want to return to.

2. Bring a map of the so you can be sure you are going to the right place when touring or taking a taxi. It helps to have a visual map when asking for directions because it can be difficult to communicate. Bring a map with you because once you arrive you may not be able to find a map in English. The map I bought was in Mandarin.

3. Whenever you ride in a taxi, get a receipt. If you accidentally leave something in the cab or have a problem that is the only way to get in touch with the company and identify the taxi.

Visas:

Check the date on your visa to make sure it is correct or you may not be able to enter the country. Also, check how many times you can enter the country on your visa. A layover may count as one entrance, so you would need another entrance to come back.
